Heath Park Miniature Railway

The Heath Park Miniature Railways and Tramway are situated in the beautiful Heath Park, slightly north of the NHS University Hospital of Wales (Heath Hospital). One visitor to the facility said to us this is the 'Hidden Jewel of Cardiff', so peaceful and safe. Every month we open to the public 1pm to 5pm to enjoy and relax for an inexpensive day out riding the trains and trams in an enclosed safe environment. Refreshments being available from our (Hygine Rating 5) BBQ, Pullman Buffet and Ice Cream cabin. A wide range of of toys and souvenirs are available from our Station Gift Shop where cold drinks and confectionary are also available, giving our younger visitors an opportunity to experience 'shopping' for sweets costing pence.
We invite visits from school and various children’s charities along with Scouts, Cubs and Beavers to attend private running days, they are all regular visitors to the society and all we ask for is donation to help with the up keep of the society.

Cardiff Model Engineering Society

1948-2024

THE PAST
One of the first Santa specials with Jack Thomas in charge of the train.

The Society’s story goes back to the months just after Britain’s railways were nationalised when a group of like-minded enthusiasts got together in May 1948.

THE BEGINNING
Her Majesty and Prince Charles, Cardiff Eisteddfod 1960.

The National Eisteddfod of Wales was held in Cardiff in 1960 and it seems that models were included in the craft section for the first time. The Society supported this event through the Federation. The Eisteddfod was attended by Queen Elizabeth II, the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Charles (his first visit to Wales since becoming Prince of Wales two years earlier although his investiture was not until 1969), and Princess Anne. They visited the craft pavillion and Princess Anne came away with a doll in Welsh costume. What railway exhibits the party viewed are not recorded.

THE CURRENT

Three generations of hard working enthusiasts have taken Cardiff MES to its current position of strength and status in the Model Engineering world. They have been generously and continuously supported by wives and girlfriends without whom this Society would be a pale shadow of the thriving organisation it is today.
